SYNOPSIS
Michael and Sabine are not married, but are otherwise an average German family. Both are in their early forties and have three children: Benjamin, Miriam and the baby Madeleine. Michael has a carpentry business, while Sabine, a trained nurse, would like to return to work. But taking care of Madeleine would swallow her salary as a nurse whole, so she prefers to stay at home and care for her family. For years they were doing relatively well, but Michael’s carpentry business has been going downhill in recent years. Their son Benni also simply can’t find an apprenticeship. When an old friend dies, a former school friend from Costa Rica comes to visit and raves to them about this country, where you can still make your fortune without being bullied from above. Slowly the plan matures in them: They want to emigrate and offer their children a future that doesn’t look as bleak as it does here.
But the preparation for this adventure raises bigger problems…
